TITLE: Data Analyst and Application Developer
LOCATION:
- Full remote with travel requirements
- May live anywhere in the U.S.
- Preference for living in Los Angeles metro area
- If living in Los Angeles, meet once every 2 weeks in-person
- If living outside Los Angeles, travel to branch offices in Los Angeles, CA, or Virginia Beach, VA, for one week each quarter
- Travel up to 6 times internationally: each trip is 2-weeks to Asia, Africa, or South America
Description: This position requires expertise in data management and a thirst for working internationally.
Responsibilities:
- Validate and manage data from Operation Smile patients, volunteers, and metrics for our organization’s performance. Data must be collected, cleaned, validated, analyzed, and presented.
- Manage relationships with employees and volunteers worldwide to obtain data.
- Develop applications with graphical user interfaces (GUI) to facilitate user interaction and data visualization.
- Help design and test exciting apps/programs to collect data and photos.
- Understand the patients we serve to deliver better care.
Interface And App Development:
- Design and implement user-friendly interfaces for mobile and system-based applications.
- Utilize front-end development technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create dynamic and interactive interfaces.
- Develop and integrate APIs to enable seamless communication between different software systems.
- Document interface and application development processes, including code, design decisions, and implementation details.
- Ensure the security, integrity, and performance of databases and applications through regular testing and optimization.
Collection, Validation & Storage of Patient Data:
- Direct the retrieval of scanned patient charts (PDF) and patient images from program coordinators.
- Ensure scanned charts and pictures received are complete.
- Design surveys to update volunteer data.
- Work with volunteer management team to collect volunteer data.
Data Entry (As Required):
- Direct manual data entry process into excels, databases, or scan-tron (Remark) spreadsheet template as needed.
- Develop data entry plans and protocols.
Validation Of Data:
- Patient data from medical chart, volunteer data, or any other institutional data.
- Direct Remark data validation process on scanned paper charts.
- Direct the review and correction of flagged errors generated by Remark software using approved/appropriate methodology.
- Follow established error resolution protocols, as necessary.
Validation of Patient Data: Patient Photographs:
- Support the review (and correction) of patient images for completeness and labeling accuracy using approved methodology.
- Follow established error resolution protocols, as necessary.
Dataverse Update:
- Guide process to ensure prompt uploads of properly validated data to cloud databases (e.g., Dataverse) and other data platforms.
- Liaise with OS vendors to ensure data upload completion.
Data Accountability - Retrieval and Storage:
- Oversee proper data storage on OS local data storage platforms (SharePoint).
- Execute data management tasks as required.
New App / Program Implementation:
- Help design new data collection apps and programs for institutional data.
- Pilot and educate usage of above apps internationally.
Relationship Building / Leadership:
- Build relationships with employees in other countries to collect data.
- Teach others worldwide how to use data collection systems.
- Work with two other data analysts on the team to complete projects.
- Communicate with other employees in non-technical departments worldwide, e.g., medical volunteers, data collectors, and medical mission managers.
Requirements:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree required. Master's degree optional.

Technical Requirements:
Application and User Interface Development:
- Proficiency in database development and management, including SQL and database design principles.
- Strong understanding of front-end development technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Experience with front-end frameworks/libraries such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.
- Proficiency in developing mobile or system-based applications with user-friendly GUI.
- Experience with mobile app development frameworks such as React Native, Flutter, or Xamarin.
- Knowledge of RESTful APIs and integration techniques.
Statistical Programming:
- Strong R (or equivalent) programming skills for data cleaning and validation.
- Make basic charts (scatter, bar, histogram, etc.).
- Dashboard construction using Microsoft Power BI and/or R.
- Preferred but not required: Knowledge of simple associations (correlation coefficients, univariate/multivariate regression, etc.).
Data Validation & Management:
- Proficiency in working with databases and database management, such as Excel and Microsoft Dataverse.
- Data cleaning and validation using R and Excel.
- Detail-oriented and organized regarding the quality and storage of data.
Data Collection:
- Help collect patient and volunteer data from our partners around the world in paper and electronic formats.
- Run scantron software to capture data from paper forms (OMR software).
- In-person data collection in other countries using the tools we create.
- Design data collection tools and validated surveys. Experience with survey software/apps, such as Qualtrics and REDCap, is preferred.
