Application Engineer - Power Systems and Automation

Powell Automation Division (PAD)

We are currently seeking a motivated individual to be a part of our growing Powell Automation Division (PAD). This exciting position allows the ability to not only grow professionally but also fuel the future presence of PAD in the automation space! As a member of PAD, you will work and collaborate with a group of diverse professionals to apply innovative and creative solutions to solve problems for our clients. Key responsibilities include providing technical support to generate new sales opportunities, developing formal internal sales proposals, staying up to date on current automation technology & trends, interacting with internal and external stakeholders, as well as helping to define and design automation solutions to drive the overall growth and vision of PAD.

Reports to: Technical Sales Manager of PAD

AS A PAD AUTOMATION APPLICATIONS ENGINEER YOU WILL:

  1. Become proficient in PAD solutions and offerings.
  2. Review and interpret client specifications to provide an automation solution to help customers meet their goals.
  3. Support generating new sales opportunities by providing technical support/guidance to PAD and other organizational sales teams for customer meetings and company automation initiatives. Participate in (and in some instances lead) presentations, networking activities, and events to promote automation.
  4. Interact with other Powell divisions to develop cross-business solutions.
  5. Analyze and utilize data for in-depth evaluation of current market conditions and trends to help drive the current and future automation solution offerings.
  6. Contribute to new and existing product specifications.
  7. Drive the growth of automation by helping to build and maintain long-lasting relationships, inspiring trust, enhancing the client experience, and being a thought leader for innovative automation solutions to meet customer needs.
  8. Assist in developing formal internal proposals including technical budget estimates and cost justification models for product line enhancements and/or cost-out projects.
  9. Become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the automation space by understanding and developing solutions utilizing products from various manufacturers such as SEL, Rockwell, Siemens, and GE.
  10. Ensure that the company’s Health, Safety & Environmental policies and procedures are constantly adhered to in all aspects of Site Services.

Qualifications:

  1. BS in a technical discipline, preferably an Electrical Engineering degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience, or a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant industry working experience is required.
  2. Able to review and interpret client-provided documents such as specifications, drawings, and data sheets. Strong analytical skills are required.
  3. Basic understanding in at least one of the following is preferred:
  • Automation and Control systems
  • Protective Relay programming and commissioning
  • PLC applications for Switchgear
  • Networking and Cybersecurity
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Previous experience developing, executing, integrating, and/or commissioning projects related to relay, PLC, HMI, RTU, or control systems for power applications is a plus.
  • Experience with common industrial protocols such as Modbus (RTU and TCP/IP), IEC61850, DNP3, Profibus, etc., and networking is a plus.
  • Knowledge of 3-phase power is preferred.
  • Excellent customer relation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with all levels of an organization.
  • Desire to stay up to date on current industry trends and technology to improve PAD solutions/offerings.
  • Able to work effectively in a team setting or independently, able to adapt to change, self-starter, innovative, and willing to make a difference.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25%.
